Dal Biriyani is a combination of rice and lentils slow cooked with a variety of Indian spices. The fragrant Basmati rice along with vegetables and lentils makes this a healthy wholesome dish.

Ingredients
1 cup basmati rice
1/4 cup arhar dal/yellow lentil
2 medium potatoes, cubed
2 medium onions, sliced
1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
1/4 teaspoon garam masala
1 tablespoon cilantro
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon ginger paste
1/2 teaspoon garlic paste
1/2 teaspoon green chili, crushed
1/2'' cinnamon stick
1 black cardamom
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
Oil to deep fry
Directions

Oil to deep fry
Directions
- Wash and soak the rice and dal separately in cold water for 30 minutes.
- Deep fry potatoes and onions separately till they attain light golden color. Keep aside.
- Heat ghee in another pan and add cumin seeds, ginger paste, garlic paste and green chili. Stir for about 30 seconds.
- Now add cinnamon stick, black cardamom and turmeric powder. Mix well.
- Add soaked rice and lentil and stir for about 30 seconds.
- Add water and salt and bring this to boil. Close the pan and cook on low heat till water evaporates and the rice is done.
- Add fried potatoes, onion and garam masala. Mix well.
- Garnish with cilantro and caramelized onion. Serve hot.
