Dal Biriyani is a combination of rice and lentils slow cooked with a variety of Indian spices. The fragrant Basmati rice along with vegetables and lentils makes this a healthy wholesome dish.

Cook Time : 45 min


Ingredients

1 cup basmati rice
1/4 cup arhar dal/yellow lentil
2 medium potatoes, cubed
2 medium onions, sliced
1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)

1/4 teaspoon garam masala
1 tablespoon cilantro
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon ginger paste
1/2 teaspoon garlic paste
1/2 teaspoon green chili, crushed
1/2'' cinnamon stick
1 black cardamom
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
Oil to deep fry

Directions
  1. Wash and soak the rice and dal separately in cold water for 30 minutes.
  2. Deep fry potatoes and onions separately till they attain light golden color. Keep aside.
  3. Heat ghee in another pan and add cumin seeds, ginger paste, garlic paste and green chili. Stir for about 30 seconds.
  4. Now add cinnamon stick, black cardamom and turmeric powder. Mix well.
  5. Add soaked rice and lentil and stir for about 30 seconds.
  6. Add water and salt and bring this to boil. Close the pan and cook on low heat till water evaporates and the rice is done.
  7. Add fried potatoes, onion and garam masala. Mix well.
  8. Garnish with cilantro and caramelized onion. Serve hot.
