1/2 cup uzhunnu parippu/urad dal/white lentils

1/2 cup kadala parippu/channa dal/split chickpeas(brown)
1 cup curry leaves
1 teaspoon hing / asafoetida
1/2 cup dried red chilly
2 big pods garlic(optional)
1 teaspoon black pepper (optional)
2 teaspoons oil
Salt to taste


  1. Heat a pan in medium flame. To this add 1 teaspoon oil and both types of lentils followed by red chilies.
  2. Roast till the lentils become golden brown. Switch off the flame and add hing to it. Mix well and set aside.
  3. Roast curry leaves, garlic and pepper for about 2 to 3 minutes and set aside.
  4. Add salt and grind all the ingredients to a fine or coarse grained powder based on your preference.
  5. Add oil to form a smooth paste before serving.
